Optimization of knight's sword weapon setup

Mensaje por Cander el Vie 1 Nov 2013 - 1:25

Hola todos! Estaba pensando sobre unas cosas (como siempre en cambio de subir lvl y hacer tareas), asi que escribí un informe para hacerme útil. Wink

After reading Gorak @ tibia-stats.com's research article about shielding (June 2011) some time ago and continually stumbling on knights that seem to be concerned about optimizing their equipment but apparently haven't been taking the results of this report into consideration, I felt it was handy to publish something myself to refer to than having lengthy discussions about the topic.

So the point of this little report is to simply shed some light on his article and to discuss the current optimal weapon/shield setup for all you sword-knights out there, as that report got a few years on the neck and new gear have got available since that. I did also out of curiosity run a few tests on my own to verify that melee skill increasers (like a sword ring) gave improving shielding ability when a sword weapon is used as shield.

A short summarize of the interesting things in Gorak's report (if you're to lazy to read it) is that when no shield is equiped, the weapon is used for blocking, using the weapon's defence and the melee skill of the weapon's type as parameters. He therefore concluded that the strong two-handed weapon The Avenger was a very good choice for sword using knights at that time when Shiny Blade/Ornate Shield/Prismatic shield wasn't available and the now removed target dummies tended to make the knight's sword skill alot of higher than the shielding.

My own test was identical in practice as Gorak's test in the shielding reserach article, using a convient spot at a Devil Helmet Quest related area down in the mazes of Ancient Temple. Presented below is how damage reduction varied using diffrent equipment setups:

skills of the character used

Test run 1 - base setup

Test run 2 - removing shield and using a sword with same defence for shielding

Test run 3 - using a sword ring, expected to see improved shielding performance here compared to test 2

Test run 4 - using both sword ring and beserk potion

Playing around with tibia-stats.com's Damage Reduction Calculator, you can see that when using a poor defence equipment like a longsword, you'll notice that the improvment in performance is tiny if you for example increase the sword skill 4 by using a sword ring. I realized this afterwards that the duration of these tests maybe had to be really long to produce results without small variance, when searching for small diffrences like this. Although with the poor and confusing result from test 2 and 3, I still believe that skill increasers naturally boost shielding performance, when looking at the final test.

The foruth test compared to the first (and second) on the other hand, ditching the shield using a equally good sword as shield and pushing the sword skill up to 18 higher than the shielding skill (used in the first test), at least resulted in significant improved performance. So, the conclusion of this test would simply be that when not using a shield, its extra beneficial to use melee skill increasers as they also boost defence, especially Berserk Potions as they then don't give any negative effetcs.

With that into the books, let's discuss equipment setup. By studying the obtainable sword/shields (not the special/super rare items), I would today (Tibia 10.21) use the following setups depending if you want to stay cheap, optimize attack power or get the best damage reduction possible (not taking level requirements into consideration):

Economical setup: The Avenger, using Beserk Potions
Aggresive setup: Shiny Blade + Shield of Corruption, using Beserk Potions
Blocker setup*: Shiny Blade (or cheaper alternative like Emerald Sword) + Prismatic/Ornate Shield

*Assuming you will be often will be attacked by more than 2 creatures simultaneously, because otherwise its possible to block just as good with the economical setup, depending on your skills. Without taking the physical resistence bonuses those shields give into consideration, The Avenger would block better if sword skill is 9 higher** (according to the calculator). So depending on the sword skill, the strength of the attacks, (to calculate the damage removed by the 4-5% physical resistance) and number of attacking creatures (even though an attack can't be blocked (>2 creatures attacking simultaneously), the resistence bonus is applied on those attacks aswell) make the defence performance of the two mentioned setups vary

**You will notice playing around with the calculator, 1 weapon/shield Def seem to equals 3 skill levels in damage reduction

Another research article about offline traning, made by Gorak aswell, tells the fact that melee skills advances twice the speed in offline traning than shielding for knights. A year of efficient offline traning would thus give a knight the skills 104/96, therefore even for those players with newly created knights (since removal of target dummies, summer update 2012) that completely abandoned the traditional skilling method and just relying on offline traning, will "still" have a significally higher melee skill which make a The Avenger a fair choice, especially considering its such an easy obtainable item.

The downside of two-handed weapons though is that shielding is not trained when used, although the amount of shielding skill gained when hunting in my opinion is pretty small compared to what you gain of using offline traning effectively in the long run (12 hours of offline traning equal 5400 hits to get a feeling). But as Gorak in style of said in the article, in a time when there wasn't one-handed weapons/shields good enough to beat The Avenger, "it may be rewarding to keep shielding in trim, as we don't know how the game develop and what new items that will come". And as of today you could say he was right with the introduction of the previously mentioned powerful alternatives!

Thanks for reading
, I hope I didn't lose you on the way down here! Razz This got all a bit long & messy without really presenting any revolutional results, but I hope you found the report interesting and entertaining! And feel free to discuss the topic and please point out the errors.

Saludos
